Marlboro

This season, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Marlboro Music School and Festival.  Marlboro Music is acclaimed world-wide as an institution devoted to artistic excellence and to developing new musical leaders. It is where the concept of having master artists play together with exceptional young professional musicians was born, initiating a dynamic new approach to learning.  Since 1951, generations of the world's most talented musicians have come together in the small town of Marlboro, Vermont to share new perspectives and learn from one another, to inspire and be inspired.  Audiences share in this infectious spirit of discovery—hearing exciting young artists, insightful interpretations of chamber music   masterworks, and unfamiliar pieces—all played with great passion and joy.

A special 60th Anniversary publication - Reflections on Marlboro Music - (below) has some wonderfully evocative photos from James Levine and Van Cliburn playing four-hands in 1956 to Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida playing with some of the current group of exceptional young professionals.  There are also some touching and insightful stories from Arnold Steinhardt of the Guarneri Quartet (formed at Marlboro in 1964); from an audience member who first came as a student in the 1950s and recently endowed an annual Marlboro concert in Toronto; to Jonathan Biss talking about "time" at Marlboro and the lack of it in our professional life; and a fresh look at Marlboro from a British journalist who experienced Marlboro for the first time last summer.  I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we did putting it together.

The major American orchestras, which form such an important part of each Carnegie Hall season, all boast Principals and members whose summers at Marlboro shaped their musical per-spectives. The Philadelphia and Metropolitan Opera Orchestras each have more than twenty former participants.
